Communications Director

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a renowned international affairs institution with global operations, is seeking a dynamic Communications Director to help manage its media relations, events, social media, email marketing, and public affairs functions working in Washington with its DC-based communications team. This position reports to the Vice President for Communications.

The Communications Director works closely with the VP for Communications and will manage a four-person outreach team. The Communications Director will advise Carnegie's policy experts and global communications staff on media, content, and outreach strategy. Responsibilities include: advising the VP for Communications on vital communications objectives; designing and implementing communications plans for major initiatives; advancing creative strategies for engaging with media to elevate the ideas and authors of the Carnegie Endowment network; overseeing a prominent events program that includes a wide variety of formats and frequently featuring VIP participants; assisting with government affairs; developing thoughtful marketing and social media campaign strategies for a wide variety of content; and assessing how the Carnegie Endowment can take advantage of emerging trends, platforms, and methods of communication in the digital space.

Experience working on Capitol Hill or the administration, and knowledge of the Congressional and executive agency policymaking process is strongly preferred. A minimum of five years of experience in communications, public affairs, or media relations required. Management experience, knowledge of and interest in foreign policy, and excellent presentation, writing and editing skills are essential. Experience managing high level event strategy, social media campaigns, and the development and execution of communications plans for policy driven content is preferred.

The ideal candidate will have authoritative knowledge of the foreign policy media environment including press contacts; the ability to absorb complex research, identify key themes and policy implications, and translate them for a media and policy audience; and demonstrable management experience with a proven record of mentorship, accountability, and transparency. Candidates should have the capacity for collegial engagement with a diverse global network of exceptional scholars and associates.

Located in Dupont Circle, we offer an outstanding benefits package. This is not a virtual position. Carnegie employees are required to work in the office Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and can work from home Mondays and Fridays.
