Summary:

Healthy Brain Network is an exciting initiative aimed at collecting imaging, genetic, and phenotypic data from 10,000 children and adolescents. All participants within the study receive free mental health, learning, and language evaluations, as well as a feedback session and a report. The social work intern will gain training in conducting components of the Healthy Brain Network (HBN) research protocol and learn to conceptualize cases using a DSM-5 framework. The social work intern will be interfacing with children, adolescents, young adults, and families. A multitude of assessments will be administered as part of HBN, including collection of medical and psychiatric information, and intake interviews.

Reporting to the Social Work Supervisor, this is a part-time, unpaid intern position located at the Harlem Healthy Brain Network data collection center.

Responsibilities:

Under supervision by a licensed social worker:

  • Conduct, or participate in, components of the diagnostic and/or clinical evaluation to include:
  • Conducting intake interviews
  • Co-facilitating, and later conducting semi-structured psychiatric interview (KSADS)
  • Participate in feedback sessions with participants and parents
  • Assist in the development of comprehensive biopsychosocial and feedback reports to include pertinent medical history, background clinical information, cognitive testing results, clinical impressions, and diagnosis based on all information acquired during the HBN evaluation
  • Conduct phone calls to medical and treatment providers to obtain relevant information about each participant
  • Based on the evaluation results, assist in the determination of appropriate treatment recommendations and referrals
  • Participate and present in weekly case conferences
  • Training in building and maintaining the HBN referral network
  • Participate in Didactics groups

Qualifications:

Applicants for the social work intern positions must submit a cover letter and current CV when applying here. Additional requirements include the following:

  • Must be in good standing in a social work program;
  • Availability for a minimum of 21 hours of clinical work per week, ideally spread across 3 days
  • Flexible scheduling during the week to accommodate 1 hour of direct supervision, as well as time for program training and didactics.
  • Understanding of DSM-V diagnostic procedures a plus
  • Crisis management skills a plus
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with a wide range of individuals/groups
