Overview

HJF is seeking a motivated Data Scientist to join the epidemiology team of John P. Murtha Cancer Center Research Program (MCCRP), Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MCCRP.

The incumbent will conduct day-to-day duties in handling complex health data including data evaluation, processing, consolidation, and management. The person will also develop or help develop strong strategies in integrating and utilizing the large health data for cancer research.

Note: This work site requires that Non-US Citizen incumbents have lived in the US three out of the past five years.

Responsibilities
    Working with related entities in requesting and receiving the large data at various stages.
  • Evaluating large data from various sources and at various stages in data quality, identifying any data issues, and resolving them for cancer research.
  • Help evaluate and optimize the computer interface used to access and display the complex large data.
  • Building tools and SQL/SAS programs to query, consolidate, process and manipulate the complex linked data, and transferring data into a format to make it appropriate for statistical analysis.
  • Performing literature review to identify progress and new technologies in data science and applying them to improve the data quality and utilization.
  • Creating documentation and reports in data-related content.
  • Conducting data analysis as needed.
  • Support and collaborate with other researchers in data-related fields.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Doctoral Degree in computer science, statistics, health or social science, mathematics, or a discipline related to the application of large data.
    • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required for PhD level candidates
  • Candidates with a Masters Degree and and 7-9 years are encouraged to apply

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge and experience in large medical data, particularly medical encounter and claims data.
  • Proficiency in structured query language (SQL) and using statistical software.
  • Familiarity with data management tools and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate complex data and visualize data in an effective way.
  • Excellence in attention to detail.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge in AI with actual application as a plus.
  • Experience in using Google BigQuery as a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and with team members with various backgrounds.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Security Requirements: Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust Investigation.
