SUMMARY:

American Councils for International Education is seeking qualified English teachers for the position of English Team Teacher at the Uaiakinan ao Uarokoan Toronibwaia I-Kiribati (UUTI) Youth Skills Camp from August 19-September 9, 2024 in Pacific Harbor, Fiji. The UUTI Youth Skills Camps are immersive, overnight three- to four-week English language and work-readiness programs for I-Kiribati students between 15 and 18 years old. UUTI is an activity of the Kiribati Threshold Program, funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation, an agency of the U.S. Government in partnership with the Kiribati Ministry of Education, and implemented by American Councils for International Education. Set in a summer camp type venue, the program goals are:

1) build participants' proficiency and confidence in English language skills;
2) cultivate cross-cultural workplace skills, including leadership and critical thinking skills;
3) enhance communication skills for personal and professional development;
4) develop information and communication technology (ICT) skills essential to the current job market;
5) foster cross-cultural understanding through academic and extracurricular activities.
The main role of the teacher is to provide instruction following a set curriculum designed to build English language skills while developing work readiness in the areas of communication, cross-cultural workplace skills, and ICT.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Teach full-time for the duration of the program, using the provided curriculum as well as created materials and classroom aids;
* Collaborate with the teaching team to create activities that connect to the different content areas;
* Provide guidance to students both inside and outside the classroom;
* Conduct training sessions for counselors and I-Kiribati team teachers to improve their professional teaching skills;
* Assist with extra-curricular and evening activities, including on the weekends, as assigned by the UUTI Camp Director;
* Promote group work in a dynamic environment;
* Encourage flexibility and adaptability with a positive attitude;
* Support acceptance of people and traditions different from their own; and
* Provide support for participants to exercise leadership and decision-making skills

Qualifications

* Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred;
* Fluent English speaker;
* Available from August 15-September 9, 2024, for required staff training and camp;
* 3-5 years of classroom teaching experience, ESL and overseas experience preferred;
* Experience teaching communication, cross-cultural workplace skills, and ICT skills preferred, but not required;
* Experience conducting teacher training sessions with a focus on language learning;
* Ability to work all evenings and weekends for the duration of the program as needed;
* Ability to quickly adapt to new situations and different working conditions;
* Be a team player and work to provide a cohesive camp experience for the extent of the program;
* Proven effectiveness in a cross-cultural work environment; and
* Effective interpersonal and communication skills.

BENEFITS:
This is a paid consultant position with a set honorarium for the extent of the program, including training and pre-program planning sessions. In addition, American Councils covers travel expenses to and from the UUTI camp site (air and road travel, and any visa expenses), and medical insurance during time of program.


Please Note: All positions are contingent on approval of running an in-person program by American Councils management and the program funder.
