Versar is a recognized leader in the design, integration, installation, maintenance, and management of complex integrated physical electronic security systems to protect federal government facilities and critical assets.

Versar is seeking an experienced, detail-oriented, Low Voltage Security Systems Designer to join our team to support our growing federal government portfolio. This position can be performed remotely with occasional travel to our DC metro offices and client sites.

Job Description

In this role, you will create engineering designs to support federal government programs to include system design, product selection, hardware and software integrations related to electronic security systems. Attend pre and post award site surveys. Will work independently and as part of an engineering team.

  • Experience in the design of physical security systems to include physical access control systems, closed-circuit television, intrusion detection systems, security communications systems, fiber optics/copper network communications systems, communications backbones, wireless applications, and perimeter protection.
  • Experience developing or the support of development of cost proposals in response to customer requests for proposal.
  • Experience creating network and system diagrams and conduit plans for low voltage systems and IP-based security devices supporting multi-site electronic security system and network infrastructure.
  • Independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard physical security engineering techniques, procedures and criteria using best judgement in making adaptations and modifications.
  • Reviews scope of work, bid drawings and customer specifications and standards to fully understand all requirements of the design with the goal of fully developed, constructible designs.
  • Uses engineering concepts to create detailed installation drawing packages to meet customer specifications and delivers a high-quality product on time and within the engineering budget.
  • Routinely creates, reviews engineering drawing packages, wiring diagrams, block diagrams, typical drawings, device schedules and riser diagrams.
  • Routinely responds and provides direction and/or clarification to installation technicians.
  • Creates and submits RFI questions to internal and external customers to verify design parameters.
  • Performs security and engineering analysis, research, calculations, and studies required to develop security system concepts of design.
  • Performs site visits and all necessary fieldwork to verify actual existing conditions and to ensure compatibility with the proposed security system design.
  • Prepares drawings in sketch form with sufficient information to be developed by the Security Designers into final CAD drawings. Provides the Security Designers with all required information to complete the final drawings.
  • Reviews the drawings prepared by the Security Designers on an on-going basis and is responsible for its accuracy and technical content.
  • Creates as-built drawings from field red-line markups and coordinates with field personnel to produce complete and accurate as-built drawings. Answers technical installation and integration questions from project managers, technicians and subcontractors to support the operations department and ensure that the security design is properly implemented.
  • Works with OEM product vendors, distributors, and consultants to develop and maintain an extensive product knowledge to develop the best technical solutioning and stay up to date on the latest security products and trends.
  • Authors engineering narratives, concepts-of-design, and operational concepts.
  • Travel domestically to client sites may be required up to 20% of the time.

Technical Requirements

Knowledge of electronic security systems to include:

  • FIPS-201-2, HSDP-12, FICAMS
  • Design of complex, integrated security systems for federal customers
  • Physical Access Control Systems
  • Video Management Systems
  • Intrusion Detection Systems
  • Perimeter Intrusion Detection Systems
  • Networking design knowledge

Minimum Requirements:

  • 5+ years of low voltage security systems engineering or designing experience plus a High School Diploma or GED.
  • or 3 + years of low voltage security systems engineering or designing experience plus an Associate's Degree or higher in a related field.
  • Excellent communicate skills in the English language, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to communicate advanced technical concepts in a commonsense manner to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to obtain and hold a security clearance.
  • A minimum of three years engineering experience in electronic security system design.
  • A thorough understanding of physical security systems integration, barriers, access control, intrusion detection, CCTV, lighting, alarm monitoring systems, communications, electrical power, surge protection and grounding.
  • Familiarity with Federal Government requirements for physical access control credential management (HSPD-12, FICAMS, and FIPS-201-2).
  • Ability to work within a team environment or work alone with minimum supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think outside the box and suggest alternate technical solutions.
  • Self-motivated individual with a strong technical and interpersonal skills, and a history of professional growth and increased responsibility.
  • Experienced in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Project, Visio, and Teams.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Active security clearance.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Federal Government experience.
