Philadelphia and Scientific Advancement

The evidence project is part of the Philadelphia and Scientific Advancement portfolio, which houses all of Pew's grantmaking initiatives, including three that support scientific research nationally and internationally-the Pew Biomedical Programs, Pew Fellows Program in Marine Conservation, and Lenfest Ocean Program-and those focused on supporting thriving communities in Pew's hometown of Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, our grants support health and human services nonprofits, artists and arts organizations, and public spaces that make the city a better place to live for everyone, and we also perform research and policy work on local issues such as housing, jobs and the economy, poverty, and demographics.

Evidence Project
The evidence project leads two networks. The Transforming Evidence Funders Network (TEFN) is a global, cross-sector community of more than 70 public funding agencies and philanthropies who aim to increase the public impact of research investments. Pew launched TEFN in 2020, with partners, as a learning and collective action platform for these funders. Among other approaches, TEFN funders are invested in community-engaged and policy-oriented scholarship and are exploring opportunities for collective action beyond their individual funding portfolios. These include breaking down structural barriers that limit the public impact of research, advancing equity by broadening recognition of diverse forms of knowledge, and building the evidence base about how best to increase the use and usefulness of research for improving outcomes. The project also supports a complementary network, the Transforming Evidence Network (TEN). By bringing together a wide variety of experts from around the world, TEN creates opportunities for learning and action across sectors and disciplines about promising strategies to generate and mobilize publicly impactful research and strengthen the use of research and other types of evidence for better and more equitable outcomes.

Civic Science Fellow Program

The Senior Associate will participate in the , a network of emerging leaders working to ensure that advances in science, health, and technology benefit all people. While participating in this program, the Senior Associate will lead the co-design and implementation of a project with the evidence project team (see responsibilities below for more details on the scope of the project). The Senior Associate will also participate in 12 months of cohort activities (e.g., regular virtual cohort meetings, networking, and other professional development activities). The Senior Associate will spend approximately 75 percent of their time on carrying out the project co-designed with the evidence project team and 25 percent of their time on shared learning and networking activities outside of their work with the evidence project team.

Position Overview

The senior associate works with the evidence project to support the work of TEFN. Reporting to the manager, the Civic Science Fellow supports the project's work to build the evidence base about effective funder practice in this field, develop resources for grantmakers based on that evidence base, and establish connections and collaborations that advance project goals.

The position is located in Pew's Washington, DC, office, and will participate in Pew's core in-office days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will have flexibility to work from home the remainder of each week.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the country for which they are seeking employment without visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

• Foster a work environment that is diverse, equitable, inclusive, and accessible and in line with Pew and the project's related goals.
• Collect and synthesize field-tested promising grant practices that enable grant makers to support research that engages with and meets the needs of policymakers, the public and private sector, and affected communities and leads to the use of that research. Develop and maintain necessary information technology (e.g., Creative Commons License and repository).
• Identify shared goals and opportunities to align funder investments in the evidence base on research impact and evidence use. Survey literature and other initiatives to identify gaps and needs.

• Support and lead, in collaboration with the manager, funder network workgroups focused on grant practices and building the underlying evidence base.
• Identify compelling messaging, draft written outputs and conference presentations, and identify outreach outlets for these workstreams.
• Monitor and synthesize key external activities and communications around changes in grant practices and scholarship about research impact.
• Plan, organize, and implement meetings, conferences, and other events both at Pew and externally. Represent Pew at these events.
• Participate in activities that support program and Pew-wide objectives.

• Excellent applied research and analytical skills, including synthesizing large sets of information and identifying key themes.
• Demonstrates agility in connecting diverse issue areas, institutions, and thought leaders; embraces complexity.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
• Generally, four years of applicable experience.

Travel

This position requires occasional domestic and international travel to meetings and conferences.
