Global Science & Technology, Inc (GST), a growing scientific and high technology company, is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Instructional Designer to directly support the Applied Remote Sensing Training (ARSET) program at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

The ARSET program enables organizations engaged in water, disasters, land, climate, and air quality management to apply NASA Earth Science Data. The project works directly with agencies and policy makers to develop online and in-person trainings that teach users around the globe how to access, visualize, and apply NASA Earth Science Data in their professional area.

The position is located at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD, with some time required onsite, but also includes some flexibility for teleworking and alternative work schedules.


Position Summary:

The responsibilities of the Instructional Designer will be to work with ARSET programmatic staff, trainers, and subject matter experts to improve the development of training curricula, including interactive web-based learning modules for asynchronous multimedia (stand-alone, web-delivered); synchronous-remote (live instructor-led, web-delivered); and in-person learning on scientific topics. This would entail assisting trainers in defining training goals, defining learning objectives, designing training content, and determining appropriate training delivery methods.

The instructional designer will assess the effectiveness and efficiency of instruction; review existing instructor-led curriculum materials (courses, methods, materials, content); recommend new training technologies (e.g., learning management systems, emerging technologies); and consult with instructor staff to improve instructional strategies and methodologies and course and delivery techniques. The instructional designer will also review student feedback surveys and consult on course improvements to address feedback.

The ideal candidate is someone with a desire for continuous learning and strong problem-solving, communication (both oral and written), and interpersonal skills. The candidate must be able to work effectively across several different functional areas in a collaborative environment, be well-organized and able to handle multiple assignments, be willing to take initiative, and be constantly improving his/her Instructional Design tradecraft.


Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant academic discipline (Instructional Design and Technology, education, instructional designer STEM field) plus three years of relevant experience developing multimedia, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Relevant experience must be in instructional systems design (ISD); learning technologies (e.g., e-learning and technology-based tools); or adult learning (e.g., training and teaching)
  • Experience with interactive web-based learning modules for asynchronous multimedia (stand-alone, web-delivered); synchronous-remote (live instructor-led, web-delivered); and in-person learning on scientific topics
  • Demonstrated ability to assess participant training needs, define training goals, design training objectives, and determine appropriate training delivery methods
  • Ability to present and make recommendations regarding course design, technology, and instruction delivery options
  • Experience in delivery methods such as video, microlearning, and gamification to recommend the best option for learner engagement and retention
  • Ability to analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of instruction based upon question statistics from assessments and surveys and implement changes to instruction based on analysis results
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong attention to detail
  • Team-oriented and an aptitude for coordination
  • Ability to multi-task and process information efficiently
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse team members or in multidisciplinary collaborations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Desired Qualifications, but not required:

  • Bachelor's degree in science or closely related discipline or coursework in Earth and/or Environmental Science preferred
  • Experience creating and delivering e-learning with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Articulate Storyline, Google Meet, Microsoft Office/Teams, or WebEx
  • Experience with e-learning authoring tools, media/graphic design, and learning management systems (Moodle, OpenEdX)
  • Experience with webinar software
  • Web development skills (HTML)
