Who we are

The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) is responsible for building, operating and maintaining a safe and seamless transportation network in Maryland. That network includes the planning, construction and operation of Maryland's highway, transit, maritime and aviation facilities, as well as the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration. In addition to the five modes, MDOT also oversees the Maryland Transportation Authority, which operates the state's seven toll facilities. The MDOT model agencies are:

  • Maryland Aviation Administration
  • The Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA) fosters the vitality of aviation statewide and promotes safe and efficient operations, economic viability and environmental stewardship. Responsible for the operation of Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall and Martin State airports, the MAA provides friendly, convenient facilities and customer services and develops enhanced domestic and international passenger and cargo opportunities through intermodalism and state-of-the-art technology.

  • Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration
  • The MVA touches the life of almost every citizen in our state. Our core mission is to deliver services to our customers in the most efficient manner possible, to ensure the safety of every driver we license and maintaining the integrity and security of our processes for every product issued by MVA.

  • Maryland Port Administration
  • From the clothing we wear to the cars we drive, from the magazines we read to the sugar we put in our coffee, it is easy to take for granted the many uses of our great Port. But that is only part of the Port’s story. The Port of Baltimore in recent years has evolved in other ways, including sustaining a reputation for being a true environmental leader, emerging into as secure a port as any in the U.S., and continuing to grow an expanding cruise business.

  • Maryland Transit Administration
  • With dignity and respect, the MTA provides and supports accessible transit networks that are customer focused, safe, appealing, reliable, and efficient throughout Maryland.

  • Maryland State Highway Administration
  • The Maryland State Highway Administration is responsible for maintaining and operating nearly 17,000 lane miles of roadway and 2,500 bridges; employs more than 3,200 professionals in a variety of disciplines; and is responsible for an annual budget of $1.7 billion.

  • Maryland Transportation Authority
  • The Authority provides vital transportation links that move people and promote commerce in Maryland by:

    • Creating and maintaining a transportation network of highways, bridges, and tunnels where safety and efficiency are priorities
    • Operating and securing our facilities with innovative technologies
    • Financing transportation facilities that offer convenient choices to travelers

  • The Secretary’s Office
  • (MDOT Headquarters)

Under the direction of the Transportation Secretary, the five modal administrations work together, wherever possible, to assist each other in the development of a seamless transportation system designed to fuel Maryland's economy and enhance the quality of life of our citizens.
